Why Do YOU Give to Charity?

Have you thought about why you give to charity?

Based on their research concerning affluent individual donors, Russ Alan Prince and Karen Maru File identified seven segments (“faces”) of donors and their main reasons for giving to charity. See The Seven Faces of Philanthropy (1994, published by Jossey-Bass).

Summarizing the reasons for giving, they concluded that donors give because it:

  • helps my local community prosper, or
  • is God’s will, or
  • is good business and tax smart, or
  • is fun, or
  • feels right, or
  • supports those who helped me, or
  • is a family tradition.

Do you see your main reason(s) on the list? Would you add other reasons to the list? Let us hear from you — comment in the “Leave a Reply” box:
