An article in today’s issue of The New York Times reports on the dramatic growth in the number of public charities (up 60% in the last decade), and raises concerns about the ability of the IRS and state agencies to keep track, and about the revenue cost to the Treasury.
It’s a good reminder to me that, just because an organization has an IRS 501(c)(3) [public charity] determination, doesn’t mean that you should donate to it. Investigate before you donate.
